Daniela Kammrath de la 121.ro nu doar ca mi-a dat ocazia sa vorbesc despre proiectul de amenajare de la Larisa, dar cuvintele adaugate de ea in introducerea articolului ma onoreaza. Aprecierile din partea unei persoane ca Daniela m-au facut sa ma umflu in pene. Noroc ca sunt genul care se indoieste mereu de ea, si imi trece repede aroganta. Asta nu inseamna decat ca am nevoie frecvent de complimente. :)
Asadar, Daniela m-a rugat sa vorbesc despre primul meu proiect de amenajare interioara, si n-oi fi eu vreo vorbareata dar cand e vorba de scris, nu ma mai poti opri, asa ca am povestit cate ceva.

Am participat saptamana trecuta la una dintre licitatiile organizate de casa de licitatii Artmark, cea de arta decorativa de epoca, si desi am licitat doar pentru lampile Art Nouveau de mai jos (fara succes insa :(), au fost cateva obiecte care mi-au furat sufletul. As putea dezvolta fara probleme o noua forma de manie a cumparaturilor.

Vorbeam mai devreme (devreme doar in cronologia blogului, pentru ca au trecut ceva luni de-atunci) despre Larisa si casa ei ce urma sa o redecorez, asta dupa ce finalizasem deja proiectul "Bucatarie" in aceeasi casa la aceeasi Larisa. A venit momentul sa ofer si ceva acoperire acelei postari. Desi renovarea in sine a micutzei si neobisnuitei casutze nu a durat foarte mult - vreo trei saptamani - trebuie sa va aduc aminte ca vorbim de o doamna cu burtica mare si care devenea din ce in ce mai mare, in jurul careia a trebuit sa topaiesc, sa gravitez, sa o ocolesc ca sa duc proiectul la bun sfarsit pana in cel mai mic detaliu. Vestea buna e ca mai sunt doua saptamani pana cand Iva vine pe lume, si primul ei camin este pregatit pentru micutza familie.

Vestibulul, camera de zi si bucataria deci au fost incaperile cel mai drastic transformate. In dormitor am repozitionat doar mobila astfel incat sa-i facem loc bebelushului, dar am agatat si cateva tablouri minunate pe pereti de la Wagner Arte si am inramat cateva picturi realizate de o buna prietena a Larisei. Dormitorul are un aer pregnant feminin, dar pana la urma o sa fie locul de odihna al unei majoritati covarsitoare de doamne, Larisa si Iva, asa ca toata lumea a fost de acord. :)

This is just one of the gifts I have got for my birthday. It's not just the scent, it's the whole presentation that blows me away. Beautiful box, and beautiful bottle. And btw, the bottle can be refilled. It would have been a waste of beauty to throw away such a bottle/box when empty. :)

Chiar daca sambata nu atinsesem oficial inca onorabila varsta de 31 de ani, i-am luat-o varstei inainte si am petrecut impreuna cu Mirel, Orhideea si Larisa, toti patru fiind nascuti la diferenta de o zi, doua sau zero. :)

Si pentru ca in ultima vreme ocaziile in care ne vedem cu totii, premeditat si planificat, au devenit tot mai rare, eu mi-am dorit foarte tare sa organizez o petrecere care sa-i imbieze pe toti sa participe. Petrecerea-picnic-vintage-nocturn s-a dovedit a fi formula magica pentru acest scop si a devenit cadrul pentru o adunare intre prieteni si prieteni ai prietenilor foarte reusita. Totul a mers struna, incepand de pe la mijlocul saptamanii trecute cand inca ne faceam griji de unde facem rost de multe sticle de Coca-Cola vintage si de recuzita potrivita, vesela retro, lampioane, muzica, paie dungate :). Pana si ploaia indelung trambitata sambata pe toate canalele a intarziat suficient de mult sa apara, astfel incat noi sa avem o seara minunata, la petrecerea din parc.

Ileana de la Zwei ne-a ajutat cu briosele retro irezistibile si ca aspect si ca gust. Adrian de la Bucate-pe-Roate ne-a sarit in ajutor cu canapes-urile delicioase. Raluca si Cornel de la Green Revolution au fost de nepretuit pentru locatia magica din parc. Si astfel am reusit sa-mi pun ideile in practica si nu-mi incapeam in piele de fericire admirand rezultatul care parca se materializase direct din imaginatia mea. A propos, tortul tot eu l-am facut (bine, cu ceva ajutor la crema:)). De data asta comestibil. :)

A good week

I had a wonderful past week. Saturday's events jeopardized the balance of such week, but in the end I managed to keep it all under control and to make my own thing independent of external events.

Monday started with Sting's Symphonicity concert. Sublime! And the word is to weak to make justice to his performance. I left the concert with a feeling of great happiness, and I could read on everyone's faces that he filled us with love through his music and lyrics. Besides the deep wish to share and receive love it was also gratefulness what I felt, gratefulness for living in country where I can attend events like Sting's. The People's House, which Sting faced from the stage made me reflect upon this, as just a few years ago being there, listening to Sting, singing his lyrics would have been a crime.

On Tuesday my boss invited me to dinner. It was a good opportunity to catch up, and to have a less formal conversation. Each of us gets this way a better understanding of each others values and personality which than helps to the - more frequent and more tense - formal interactions.

Wednesday my friend Larisa, who's expecting a baby girl, gave me the opportunity to redesign her little apartment for her new life. Although I learned not to take it personally when people don't trust me yet when it comes to advise on how to decorate their house, I am really thankful and happy when someone credits me and offers me the chance. So we've been choosing the color scheme to start with. Anna Starmer's Color Scheme Bible provided us with a lot of inspiration. I have already budget-decorated her really small kitchen. Soon I'll have some photos of the project to post on the blog.

The day ended with an Aperol and Ice-Cream evening at Gelateria Venchi with some friends, and afterwords a walk in the park with someone dear. Priceless!

Some furniture has been taken apart, glued back together, fixed and prepared for the finish and upholstery. Speaking of upholstery, I did some buying on Etsy. Some beautiful pieces of fabric and passementerie. Conversion of inches and yards in metric system si no longer a secret to me. :)

Not only my first attempt to make a Rainbow Cake, but my first attempt to bake a cake ever. So imagine, the outcome was not really eatable. But at least it turned out pretty beautiful. Not as nice as this one, and for sure not as good.

Well, all ended, with church service on sunday morning and with a musical-culinary feast in the back yard of the church,

and A Midsummer Night's Dream theater performance in the evening.

That's all Folks. Let's hope for this week at least as good as the last one. In Romania it started with a holiday so, good enough so far. :)

Just for a sec, forget shabby, rustic, diy, traditional, classicist, and take a look at this house and the complete unexpected interior design. People who have such a sense of space, shape and style in order to create this kind of interior in a house that would be most of the times filled with antiques, floral fabrics and ghosts, deserve to be called BRILLIANT. The author of this interior is Ilse Crawford and her team, and it is worth to check her work out and the way she sees interior design. Modern and emotional. And I believe that this emotional component is what makes the space above so spectacular.

Attic clearance

The people I stay with these days in England, have been clearing the attic of their beautiful manor, due to some planned renovation works, and this is some of what the clearence revealed. To them it seemed to be regular stuff, but for me, oh, for me it was a fairytale... So much shabby, vintage and antique stuff, that my heart couldn't take it. :) And with this occasion, they have been kind enough to give me a beautiful box to practice the restoration on, which turned out to be a very valuable box, perfectly handcrafted in 1820. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to work on real valuable antique.

As I am spending four weeks in England, due to the restauration course, I thought it would be nice to post something about the british furniture designers and their craftsmanship. As I know a little bit how much of labour of love it is to build something out of wood, I am amazed of these few examples of furniture and the complexity of their design. Besides that I find them also very beautiful, though, especially the ones of Derrick Ibbot, surrounded by lighter design as they are already very heavy and eloquent.

Before attending for the 4th time the restoration course in Cornwall, UK, I spent a couple of days in London. To few for everything I would have loved to see and do in this fascinating city, but as our hotel was located in Notting Hill, I managed to have for the first time the Portobello Road experience. :) It requires time and patience and love for vintage and antiquities, but I loved it even if I got just a glimpse in the short time I had at my disposal. I will plan someday a trip just for the lovely Portobello.

One of my biggest home related fears became reality! I left one week ago for vacation & restoration course, which are planned to last three weeks, and today my neighbor just called to let me know that water is flowing out of my apartment. Being 4000 km apart from home, I had no other option but delegating to friends the burden to check out what is happening and to find a short term solution for the problem until I get back. The view of my apartment was - as far as I understood - depressing, as a pipe of the heating system broke down, and for God knows how long, hot water ran undisturbed into the house, up to the level of 10 cm. I guess the wooden floor has no chance under these circumstances, nor all other things that reach the floor.

After a first moment of panic, I realized that it makes no sense to pull my hair out, so I decided to continue the restoration course, and to deal with the damages in two weeks when I get back home. Also I try to view this unhappy event as a chance to redecorate my home. So please send me your positive thoughts, in order to give me strength to cope in a constructive way with this problem, and to remain calm during my restoration course, which is so important to me. :)

An end to empty walls

Finally I managed to frame some of the things I was collecting for this purpose, but always postponing it due to "I have no time" reasons. Now I have to see how to get them on the walls where they belong to. For sure they will be still leaning on the floor for at least two months, until I will be back from my skiing vacation and my last 4 weeks of restoration course in the UK. My schedule will get than a little bit more relaxed so I will find time for all the things "I always plan but never get to do" for my home.

There are still some on the waitlist, but for now I decided to frame some photos and drawings of young Romanian artist bought at some Hand Made Fairs, a vintage birthday card received from my cousin, a vintage styled picture of me and my friends, a vintage botanical drawing, a guide for correct food combinations (for my kitchen:)) and an 1881 old certificate attesting the building of my grandparents house.

You don't need to look inside to know that it is perfect. The open, green surrounding prairie, the way the house it is placed right under the tree, the simplicity of the landscape, everything leads to the conclusion that the interior would be the same too. Serene and relaxed and just perfect to live slow. Half of the house, the best half - the bathroom and relaxing zone, is organized on the porch. The claw foot bathtub would have been so stereotypical... :)

Currently I am working on two chairs as the one in the picture above. Steffi - a good friend of mine who ordered one of the two - and I, agreed on fuchsia fabric with a generous relief pattern. He is a dramatic, glamorous fashion designer so he is always attracted to bold colors and patterns. The wood will be french polished. I insisted on keeping the color of the wood as natural as it can be. I find the juxtaposition of classic shape and color with contemporary bold fabrics just beautiful. Steffi had to accept that. :)

I am not a big fan of tiled floors - elsewhere than in the bathroom or kitchen - as it is customary in the mediterranean design, but with this tiles from Popham Design I could probably easily change my mind. The colors and patterns are so powerful and dynamic. Some of them reuse patterns designed by David Hicks, a very influential designer of the 20-th century.

Centrul Vechi este in continuare o prolifica sursa de noutati pentru mon blog. Sunt oameni care impotriva infrastructurii inca foarte precare, creaza locuri minunate, pline de personalitate, si cu un design de calitate. Recent s-a alaturat curentului si Atelierul Mecanic, un loc cu o puternica amprenta industriala, incepand de la obiecte cu rol functional (scaune, mese, lampi, ferestre) pana la obiecte decorative (ceasuri de tensiune si placute avertizoare). Astfel interiorul devine foarte coerent din punct de vedere al designului, si cu toata aglomerarea asta de obiecte reci, tehnice, aerul lor vintage, lemnul masiv folosit pentru blatul barului si al meselor, lumina (naturala si artificiala) il transforma intr-un loc foarte cosy. De vazut live. :)

Am creat o pagina distincta in interiorul acestui blog, pentru ca mi se pare prea complicat si mult prea cmplicat sa gestionez doua bloguri. Aveam nevoie de un spatiu separat pentru a colectiona toate celelalte lucruri minunate pe care le gasesc zi de zi prin lumea blogurilor sau aiurea, cele care nu se refera la design interior. In sfarsit am intrat in posesia fotografiilor unuia din proiectele Iriniei din 2010, un apartament de 2 camere din Bucuresti, pe care il impart un frate si o sora. Irina a gasit un echilibru minunat intre masculin si feminin, intre functie si estetic, fara sa apeleze la stereotipuri terne. Cea mai mare parte a apartamentului este amenajata cu mobila de la European Heritage. Bucataria a dobandit adancime si un aer jucaus prin colantele de pe pereti care sunt tot creatia Irinei. Eu gasesc rezultatul incantator, voi ce spuneti?

Acum ca s-a terminat pot sa zic. Am participat si eu la Inspired 2010. Cu insucces. :) Dar sunt mandra rau ca am parcurs toate etapele pentru inscriere si participare, si chiar mai multe. Mai intai a trebuit sa invat ce-i aia axonomoetrie, planuri, sectiuni, cote, ghene unice, stalpi de rezistenta. Si Irina m-a invatat tot - cu talentul ei pedagogic extraordinar - in cel mai scurt timp. Si desi m-am simtit intimidata de proiectele castigatoare si nu numai, sunt mandra de poiectul meu si-l iubesc de mor. Am transpirat si n-am dormit pentru el.

Tema de proiect a fost o camera de studenti, destinata unui cuplu de studenti, amenajata in asa fel incat sa indeplineasca toate functiile necesare pe parcursul unei zile unei locuinte.

Ma mut in Sibiu sau in Sighisoara sau in Brasov, ma strecor intre doua case medievale si-mi construiesc copia fidela a acestei case/locuinte suedeze. Desi arhitectural nu se incadreaza in linia consacrata pe straduta pe care se afla, faptul ca este alba o face sa se devina oarecum transparenta, sa se piarda in peisaj si sa nu aduca vreun deserviciu principiilor urbanistice, ba din contra. Si dincolo de fatada, o minune! Imi plac casele construite inteligent mai mult decat orice, si ador gradinutzele patrate, izolate si intime care se nasc in spatele unor astfel de constructii. Ferestrele mari, culorile calde si non-culorile, designul nordic, cartile o fac atat de luminoasa, prietenoasa si cool.

Awww, I can't tell how beautiful I find the furniture designed by Toartie Hoare, the BDC New Designer of the Year . I love the roughness of the boiled leather in combination with floral prints or clean, straight shapes. Allthough the enevelope for documents attached to the table in forth picture could be easily assimilated to a modern touch it resembles also to antique pieces of furniture wchich very often had smart elements for writing tools or stationary. Just lovely.

Desi nu era neaparat momentul - dar cand e? - m-am entuziasmat cumplit la scaunul de mai sus, care are forma unui Thonet dar este din fier, si-am achizitionat doua dintr-un foc, ca sa fiu sigura. Se spune ca rezista o viata. Deocamdata sunt imprastiate prin casa fara vreo logica, dar mi-am propus sa le folosesc ca pretext sa reimprospatez atmosfera intr-unul din weekend-urile urmatoare. Cafeneaua recent inaugurata la New York mimeaza o biblioteca rasturnata. How cute is this? Biblioteca Bryant Park din apropiere i-a inspirat pe cei care au gandit acest spatiu, Nemaworkshop, sa decoreze cafeneaua cu detalii ce amintesc de o biblioteca, si pentru ca nu e chiar o biblioteca au intors-o aproape cu fundu-n sus. Lampile fixate perpendicular sunt elementul care dau legitimitate perfecta conceptului.

Zilele trecute am intrat in nou renovatul Hilton din Bucuresti, si am fotografiat candelabrele din holul perpedincular pe intrare. Desi amplu, fiecare componenta a candelabrului atarna separat din tavan, dar impreuna formeaza conturul unui candelabru clasic. Le gasesc foarte frumoase si elegante si am considerat ca trebuie memorate. :) In aceeasi zi, din pura intamplare, am gasit pe site-ul Homes and Gardens fotografia unui living cu un candelabru similar, de data asta amplasat intr-un living caruia ii da stralucire si feminitate. Atat candelabrul cat si coincidenta trebuiau consemnate intr-un post. :)

Not very long time ago I met Irina Neacsu. Her background is architecture, but she's so much more than an architect. She's an interior designer, she's a painter, she's a children's books illustrator, she's a teacher, she's a furniture designer and I'm happy to be able to call her also my friend. Named after the Earl or Countess of Pembroke, said to have been the first to order one. Pembroke tables came into fashion about 1750 but became really popular around 1780, therefore there are very few Chippendale style Pembroke tables and therefore highly valued.

The Pembroke table was considered to be a small useful table used occasionally, with hinged wooden brackets (known also as "elbows") to support the leaves - wich raised can increase the size - a real drawer at one end and a fake drawer at the other end, for symmetry. It was often used for bedside meals, and the common English versions as designed by Sheraton has often X - stretches between the legs.

Usually the rails are fixed to the legs with blind mortise-and-tenons. The drawer rail joins with the leg with two different joints: dovetailed half laps at the top and twin mortise-and-tenon joints on the bottom.

It is a piece of furniture characteristic for the Mid- Georgian and Neoclassical styles, and Federal style in America.

Regardless of who made such a table, it bears always the "Pembroke" name.

Pembroke Table no. 808 shown in John Andrews book, is a Sheraton style table, featuring many of his characteristics.

The straight quadrangular tapering legs ending with brass wheel coasters bear fine inlays of darker wood. The table top and the top of the legs are also inlayed with rectangular boarders of a darker wood, purple wood. The straight lined appearance of the table, depicting symmetrical, clean lines suggest along with the other details, the Sheraton style. The collars above the brass coasters have been added probably for the balance and symmetry sake.

Homework 4 - The Windsor Chair

This is the Windsor chair at its most elaborate, a fine example of the Gothic so-called "Chippendale" taste in the country furniture. Note the fine tracery fretted splats, the well formed cabriole legs and the pierced knee brackets"

The Windsor chair was developed in the late 17-th century in the vicinity of Windsor, England and became widely popular in the 18-th century as lawn furniture. It cannot be assigned to a specific maker or designer, being considered a vernacular form of furniture. Very soon the design was exported to North America who embraceed it and transformed into a highly preferred chair.

Typical English Windsor seats are made out of elm, as the interlocking grain of this wood gives good strength. Therefore English Windsor seats are often less thick than seats of American models, which were crafted out of softer wood types as pine, bass or tulip poplar.

Windsor chairs are much sought after for their comfort, style and durability. The comfortability of the chair is given by the saddle, the hand carved depressions in the seat making it fit the contours of the bottom. Due to the same reason - the use of elm for the seat - saddles are less deep in English models, as carving Elm is harder.

Traditional Windsor design, uses wedged tenon joints to join each leg to the seat. The H-shaped stretchers are meant to push the legs apart to retain the necessary tension which reduces slack, and not for holding the legs together. Actually early Windsor chairs are held together just mechanically, making glue redundant.

The Windsor chair takes several forms, mostly defined by the back of the chair:

Sack Back, Hoop Back, Comb Back, Continuous Arm, Low Back, Rod Back, Fan Back, Birdcage, Writing Arm.

The Windsor chair no. 113 is a so called sack back chair, but a very elaborate one. The cabriole legs ending in claw and ball foot, and the gothic fretwork on the back splat indicate clearly a Chippendale taste. The whole appearance of the chair suggests that it is a high style Windsor chair, and therefore probably crafted out of more expensive woods as yew and fruitwoods. British Windsor was frequently bare wood, but also painted green. Repainted Windsor chairs lose value, even if well done.

The leg knees miss the carvings of actual Chippendale designs, but instead, the pierced knee brackets embellish the area in very appropriate way for a rustic inspired chair.

" A very good quality shield back chair. The Prince of Wales plumes and their supports are beautifully carved. The shield itself has a raised section at the edges which serves to emphasize the shape. This is repeated on the legs. c. 1780, 600 - 800 GBP"

George Hepplewhite (1727 - 1786) was one of the "Big Three" English cabinet makers, contemporary with Thomas Chippendale. As in the case of Sheraton, there are no pieces of furniture made by Hepplewhite or his firm known to exist, but his widow published his book of designs in 1788 "Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer Guide" which was source of inspiration to many cabinet makers.

A more easily identifiable, distinctive light, delicate, curvier furniture than that of Chippendale wears his name, and features characteristics of the Neoclassical period. The Hepplewhite design came into fashion around 1775 and was very popular until 1800.

The favored woods were satinwood, mahogany and painted beech, often without carving, ornamentation being obtained from paint or inlays. The most common motifs that appear on Hepplewhites designs represent festoons, Prince of Wales feathers, wheat ears, the lyre motif.

His chairs are shorter and more curved that the ones Chippendale designed, having very often an expansive shield shape on the back instead of the narrower splat, but also oval, interlaced hearts and wheel shapes can be seen. The legs of the chairs are predominantly straight tapered, terminating with the spade food, formed by applying and not by carving.

The outline of the seat backs is characterized by a rounded, unbroken line.

Hepplewhite is also known for his small pieces: inlaid work tables, fire screens, knife boxes, tea caddies, all especially prized by antique collectors.

Chair no. 157 features many of the defining details of Hepplewhites design. The wide shield back is embellished with the Prince of Wales feathers. The design is clean and light, with no carving except the molding on the edges of the rail and legs. The straight tapered legs end with the spade food, a distinctive sign of Hepplewhite. Apparently the chair is made of satinwood, French polished with shellac.

Thomas Sheraton (1751 - 1806) was an English furniture designer, one of the "Big Three", along with Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite. He published books on cabinet making during his life, two of them being "The Cabinet Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing Book" and "The Cabinet Dictionary".

He never made any of the pieces shown in his book, no piece of furniture has ever been traced to him directly, so "by Sheraton" is meant the design and not the maker.

Sheraton's design came into fashion in 1790 and lasted until the early years of 1800. His works fall into the characteristics of the neoclassical style, and was influenced by the Architect Robert Adam (symmetry and revival of classical motifs) and by the French Louis XVI style (fluted legs, marquetry)

He abandoned the curvy lines of the Rococo and precedent styles, beginning to use straight, elegant, symmetric lines, with emphasis on vertical lines. Sheraton signature consists mainly, in a balanced distribution of ornaments, rectangular shapes, straight quadrangular or cylindrical legs, fluted vertically, sometimes finished with brass toe caps and wheel coasters, occasionally joined with stretchers.

The favored wood was satinwood and mahogany as veneer (mahogany veneered furniture for dining rooms and libraries, as well as for chest of drawers and wardrobes was still popular), used solid when carving was part of the design. Sheraton veneered pieces are often inlayed with bandings and borders of contrasting woods, rosewood, tulipwood, satinwood.

Thomas Sheraton had a preference for decorating the elegant satinwood cabinetwork with marquetry, depicting motifs like fans, shells, rosettes, water leaf, lyre, urns, classical figure medallions.

Another feature of his design was the gilding, fully or just parts of a furniture, but also painted borders and ornaments. Few of such furniture was preserved to our days, as the paint was worn out by time or replaced with another finish.

In Sheratons furniture the parts were always joint together by the dove tail joint.

No 86 from "Antique English Furniture", depicts the vertical splats on the back, and the simple straight lines that are representative for Sheraton design. The square tapering legs are also a common feature of such chairs. The one detail less used in his designes are the vertical leg stretches, only occasionaly seen. The chair is crafted in satinwood. Sloped arms define also Sheraton designed seating furniture.

...dar nu stiu cat o sa zabovesc. Ma simt frustrata ca am neglijat blogul si multe alte lucruri. Nu stiu ce se intampla. Nu stiu daca pur si simplu mi-am propus prea multe pe langa cele pe care sunt nevoita sa le fac. Nu stiu daca sunt de fapt incapabila sa desavarsesc asa cum mi-as dori orice task, si exista o defazare intre asteptarile mele/imagine mea despre mine si potentialul meu. Nu stiu daca sunt obosita si oboseala e motivul pentru care am senzatia ca nu dau randament. Nu stiu.

Cert e ca, avand permanent senzatia asta acuta de lipsa de timp si liniste, uneori uit si ca unele lucruri pe care trebuie sa la fac ar trebui sa-mi faca placere. Si nu mai imi fac placere. Se numeste burn-out chestia asta? Am intrat intr-un cerc vicios, renuntand uneori si sa incerc, si apoi cand totusi ma adun, nu reusesc sa-mi setez acea stare de calm si rabdare care sa produca rezultate de care sa fiu multumita si care la randul lor sa genereze satisfactia lucrului bine facut. In fiecare moment ma simt grabita si presata de cineva sau ceva.

Azi a fost una dintre zilele in care am incerc sa ma adun. Si m-am intors aici, la blog. Ma simt mai putin vinovata acum. :)

Cu intarzierea de rigoare, considerand cele de mai sus, m-am tinut si de promisiunea de a-mi face temele la vedere, dovada postul anterior.

Homework 1 - Chippendale chair

Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1779) was an english cabinet - maker, and furniture designer in the Mid-Georgian (1727 - 1760, 1760 - 1811), English Rococo, and Neoclassical Style. In 1754 he published a book of his designs, The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director. His designs are regarded as trend setters for that period and were used by many others cabinet makers. Therefore it is often difficult to establish if a piece of furniture is an original Chippendale, or only a Chippendale design. He was the first non-reigning monarch to have a style named by him. Before him, furniture style were named after reigning monarchs. :)

Chippendales work was inpired by many past styles and different cultures:

Queen Anne Period (1702 - 1714) - Cabriole legs, open pediment top

French Rococo Style (Louis XV) - open carved backs;

Early Georgian Period (Baroque) - Carvings and decorations;

Chinese motifs - Outline of a pagoda roof shape on the back of the rest (Bow top, Cupid's bow), fretwork on the back, molded sides;

Gothic motifs - Especially the pointed arch;

Greek motifs - Open pediment top, the lyre shape, cupid's bow;

The chair shown above incorporates many typical details to Chippendales work. The top of the seat back imitates the roof of a pagoda, with a carved ornament in the middle. The shape of the top is also called "Cupid's bow" as it resembles the bow of Cupid.

The open back of the chair is representative for the English Rococo, as the back of a French Rococo chair will be rather upholstered.

The pierced back splat is what Chippendale called in his book "ribband back" and " the best I have ever seen". The C-scrolls knot and interlace into the appearance of tied ribbons. The fluted shapes on side columns of the seat back, are a common feature for the Marlborough leg, another shape of leg especially favored by Chippendale.

As a very popular leg shape in the 18-th century, the cabriole legs appear also very often in Chippendales designs. The legs terminate with a ball and claw, representing a bird's claw holding a ball, also a very popular feature of the period. Carving the knee of the leg, with a fan shape, a shell shape or vegetal shapes was also a distinctive feature of Chippandales furniture.

The seat has a trapezoidal form. It developed much earlier on into this shape, as homes became more than just spaces for protection and as comfort became more important.

The antique furniture restoration course I am attending implies besides the manual work - which is challenging me soooo much - also some written work. The written work consists in choosing 35 pieces of furniture from different periods, of different styles and functionalities, from the John Andrews book "British Antique Furniture", and researching everything there is to research about them, from historical context to type of wood, finishing, joints, veneers and design elements.

So I decided it would be more fun to learn by blogging, therefore the story of each of the 35 pieces of furniture will become a post on this blog. The first one will follow in a few days. Hope that you will enjoy it.

Nu va spun nici un cuvant despre mancarea si serviciile de la Bonne Bouche, pentru ca nici una nici alta nu se ridica la nivelul amenajarii interioare (si exterioare), si pentru ca nu vorbim despre mancare pe blogul asta, da?

Trecand peste lucrurile despre care nu va spun si care nu ies nicidecum din tiparele serviciilor romanesti, localul este fara cusur. Amenajat absolut impecabil. Aproape ca pare un decor de film, atat de bine aduce cu un bistro autentic parizian. N-am reusit sa aflu cine a fost forta creatoare din spatele conceptului dar am reusit sa aflu cine a facut mobilierul. Hert Design pare sa fie un producator de mobila autohton cu lipici la noile afaceri bucurestene...

Pardoseala din placi ceramice de inspiratie flamanda, elementele semi-industriale cum e de exemplu peretele care desparte bucataria de salon, cartile si crema de maini de la baie sunt argumentele care m-au incantat pe mine peste masura, dar mi-au placut si scaunele Thonet fara de care bistro-ul n-ar mai fi bistro, usile frantuzesti care se deschid spre terasa si... vinurile cred ca sunt bune! :)

Mancam sau cantam?

... sau putem sa si mancam sa si cantam fara prea multa risipa de spatiu. Pentru cei mai inzestrati dintre noi, Georg Bohle a rezolvat problema prin masa altoita cu un pian. E cool sa o ai doar daca "Sonata lunii" nu e singura piesa pe care stii sa o "interpretezi" la pian si o faci de oricate ori esti in apropierea unuia crezand ca poti sa pacalesti pe cineva. Si in nici un caz nu mancam la masa asta. Eventual, lucram, scriem partituri, scriem pe blog, dar NU MANCAM. Asta ar n-ar fi cool deloc.

Dar poate ca doar forma unui pian este suficienta ca sa ne faca sa vibram. S-a gandit cineva si la asta, si chiar daca nu are clape, are boxe incorporate in partea inferioara pentru iPod.

In timpul liceului am locuit in internat. L-am urat. Din tot sufletul. Am urat dormitul, invatatul, spalatul, mancatul la comun atat de mult incat mai tarziu in timpul facultatii am refuzat constant si cu indarjire "propunerea" familiei mele de a locui in camin.

Bucataria de mai sus imi aduce aminte de bucataria/sala de mese din internat. Doar ca asta imi place. :) Poate pentru ca acum am si alte repere - printre care si interioarele flamande - care mai estompeaza traumele tineretii. :) Aspectul de cantina este atenuat de grinzile aparente si de blaturile si politele de lemn, si poate ca nu e cea mai conventionala alegere, dar in simplitatea ei eu o gasesc absolut remarcabila.

Desi a aparut de vreo doua saptamani, am tot amanat postul asta, doar doar voi reusi sa scanez fotografiile si sa postez niste imagini rezonabile. Nu mi-a iesit, asa ca ma prezint cu poze dupa poze. Am fost foarte incantata sa gasesc in numarul actual al editiei romanesti a Elle Decoration un articol scris de Roxana Voloseniuc despre cat de importante sunt bibliotecile si cartile intr-un camin si sa descopar ca in mare parte impartasim aceeasi parere. Casa Roxanei si parerile ei in materie de design interior, si nu numai, o recomanda ca o persoana de bun simt si bun gust care poate sa inspire.

Curs de restaurare: Saptamana 2 si 3

Am revenit de cateva zile din Anglia de la al doilea modul al cursului de restaurare de care va vorbeam aici, insa am constatat ca doua saptamani de concediu (impropriu spus in cazul de fata, mai degraba de absenta de la indatoririle zilnice) pot sa sa fie un cutit cu doua taisuri, pentru ca in saptamana trecuta de cand am revenit, azi este prima zi in care am cateva ore pe care pot sa le petrec doar cu mine. Si cu blogul meu. :)

Din pacate nu pot sa va arat ceva mai interesant decat data trecuta, pentru ca si aceste doua saptamani de curs au fost dedicate exercitiului diferitelor operatiuni din care se compune un proces coerent de restaurare. Prin urmare nu am inceput inca lucrul pe o piesa de mobilier. O vom face cand se va aprecia ca suntem mai stapani pe identificarea/aprecierea caracteristicilor care plaseaza o piesa de mobilier intr-o perioada/stil sau alta/altul, pe partea de tamplarie pentru reconstructia eventualelor componente deteriorate sever (aici e o lupta "care pe care", eu sau tamplaria :)) si pe partea de finisaj al suprafetelor care consta in ajustarea culorii diferitelor suprafete ale aceleasi piese de mobilier, grunduirea, lacuirea, lustruirea, ceruirea samd. Probabil ca asta se va intampla in episodul urmator, in septembrie, pentru ca de-a lungul celor doua saptamani am exersat izolat fiecare dintre operatiunile enumerate, si am fost incantata sa constat ca pe masura ce am incercat o data si inca o data si inca o data, am inceput sa recunosc si sa elimin din greseli si sa capat incredere.

Sunt fericita si optimista, pentru ca intre timp am reusit sa gasesc cu ajutorul unei minunate proaspete prietene, un spatiu in care pot sa-mi incropesc un atelier de weekend in care sa experimentez. Va voi tine up to date.

Despre Cornwall in continuare numai de bine. De fapt de bine la superlativ. Am avut noroc sa am soare 10 zile din 14, probabil singurele 10 zile de soare din Cornwall. Recomand zona cu multa convingere, oricui se simte atras de natura, izolare, atmosfera rurala britanica. E exact ca in filme. Promit! :)

Bucurestii Vechi au devenit The Place To Be, incepand cu primavara asta. Simti zumzareala si agitatia si efervescenta creativa inca de departe, si o dupa-masa petrecuta printre terasele chic, strazile desfundate inca pe alocuri, boutique-urile vibrand de inovatie si prospetime, oameni tineri, oameni batrani, oameni frumosi, olandezi, tigani, si alte etnii si nationalitati, toate separat si impreuna nespus de pitoresti, este o placere.

Printre lucrurile care mi-au ramas in gand dintr-o hoinareala din-asta, este manunchiul de becuri din Atelier A!urea. Foarte faina si necostisitoare metoda de iluminat. Si nu mai vorbesc de hainele vintage pe care le gasiti aici. Dau dependenta! :)

Curs de restaurare: Saptamana 1

Trec peste incercarile - care se vor dovedi oricum nereusite - de a ma scuza pentru lipsa postarilor si intru direct in subiect ca macar ultima saptamana de absenta sa o motivez. In demersul meu de a-mi descoperi o ocupatie secundara onorabila, adica un hobby pe limba romaneasca, am navigat, m-am documentat, am cantarit si m-am inscris la un curs de restaurare mobila in Anglia. Partea administrativa am bifat-o acum vreo sase luni, asa ca in ultima jumatate de an n-am facut decat sa tzopaiesc entuziasmata de perspectiva asta.

Vulcanul islandez cu nume imposibil era sa ma impiedice sa zbor spre Anglia dar ne-am inteles in final, asa ca am ajuns la destinatia parca decupata din romanele victoriene, zona de coasta din Cornwall. Conace robuste si primitoare (fiecare cu dealul lui), verde intens, coasta si mare, sate de pescari miniaturale, ploaie marunta si aproape constanta, drumuri inguste si indiguite, fazani si rate salbatice care umblau in voie pretutindeni. Am locuit la Tredudwell Manor, un B&B al unui cuplu simpatic si tanar anglo-francez, care gatea fantastic. Mi-a fost frig constant si am fost putin frustrata din cauza dependentei de masina, dar asta n-a fost suficient sa anuleze bucuria cu care am descoperit un astfel de loc.

Pot sa raman inconsecventa si sa declar pentru a nu-stiu-cata oara ca am decis cum arata casa visurilor mele? Conacul Tredudwell redus la dimensiuni rezonabile si poate ceva mai aproape de un oras mare si aglomerat (pentru echilibru), a ajuns asadar sus de tot in lista preferintelor.

Dar ca sa ajung si la subiectul anuntat, prima saptamana din cele noua planificate pentru cursul de restaurare a fost scopul calatoriei. Fiind prima saptamana am primit diferite piese ale puzzle-ului ce este reconditionarea de mobila veche, dar la finalul saptamanii am avut o secventa teoretica surprinzator de clara a etapelor ce trebuie urmate pentru reconditionarea unei piese vechi de mobilier. Au fost extrem de interesante discutiile pe marginea identificarii perioadei corespunzatoare diferitelor piese de mobilier, a tipurilor de lemn si a secretelor acestui mestesug astfel incat un obiect reconditionat sa fie functional si estetic dar sa pastreze urmele istoriei care l-a marcat si sa nu se transforme intr-un obiect nou. M-am panicat usor la partea despre unelte si utilizarea lor, dar asta doar pentru ca celilati colegi grupa mea, toti barbati, finalizau toate sarcinile (cioplit cu dalta, taiat cu fierastraul etc.) mai repede decat mine. Cu toate astea rezultatul nu era neaparat mai bun ca al meu asa ca m-am setat mental sa ma debarasez de tendinta de a seta target-uri si dead-line-uri, pentru ca tocmai din prea multe din-astea s-a nascut nevoia de a urma acest curs. Si pe de alta parte, la sarcinile mai soft - lacuitul si ajustarea culorilor - m-am descurcat chiar binisor. :) Urmeaza urmatoarele 2 saptamani la sfarsitul lui mai. Urmeaza aplicatii practice pe o piesa de mobilier adevarata si cu potential, licitatii de antichitati si targuri de vechituri. Asa ca tzopaiesc in continuare. :)

Dupa multe tentative de a praji paine in moduri pe care nici nu vi le imaginati, oameni dragi s-au indurat de mine si mi-au donat un prajitor de paine. Dar nu e doar un prajitor de paine, e un prajitor de paine retro pe care il ador. Cam arde painea, dar asta e mai putin important. :)

Asadar, am revenit si cu a doua rama transformata. Am abuzat de colectia de timbre a fratelui meu, dar m-am straduit sa folosesc din cele mai recente, >1990, pentru ca in ignoranta mea, am presupus ca astfel minimizez riscul sa folosesc vreun timbru care poate are valoare nemasurata. Nu poti sa stii niciodata. :)).

A fost ceva din experienta unui puzzle, fiind necesar sa intorc diferitele timbre pe toate partile ca sa le incadrez estetic in perimetrul ramei, dar mult mai placut.

Desi am o mare admiratie pentru interioarele create doar cu efort creativ si nu neaparat cu efort financiar, si desi cred ca obiecte aparent neinsemnate pot genera prin alaturare ingenioasa, prin reinventare si reinterpretare un rezultat fabulos, nu pot sa nu admit ca o "piesa de rezistenta" este uneori suficienta ca sa faci o declaratie marcanta si sa scoti din anonimat orice incapere. Este cazul si acestui pat, care prin culoare si forma eclectizeaza intreg interiorul intr-un mod foarte dezirabil.

Ma straduiesc mereu sa eliminin ironia negativa din exprimarile mele, nu de alta, dar nu stii niciodata ce va intelege Universul si conformandu-se ce va trimite inapoi :) - in cazul asta o casa pe viata in Bucuresti. Cu atat mai mult cand vorbesc/scriu despre lucruri care imi plac. Hmm.

Dar oricat as gandi de pozitiv, dupa o luna de smotruit non-stop ca sa mentin o casa alba, alba, probabil ca n-as mai avea resurse nici macar pentru ironie si ar fi de-a dreptu' gandire si exprimare negativa.

Presupunand totusi, ca o locuinta aproape in intregime alba, n-ar fi o utopie, albul imaculat potentat doar printr-o diversitate de texturi si forme, este intotdeauna o solutie pentru un spatiu special si cu personalitate. Si nici o alta culoare nu mi se pare ca are atatea resurse ca albul. Poate pentru ca e o non-culoare. :) Este absenta care adunata, inmultita, ridicata la exponenti genereaza forma, continut si expresie.

Si chiar daca locuinta de mai sus este utilizata si ca show-room, ceea ce explica prezenta unei rochii de mireasa in bucatarie, nu pot sa nu remarc potentialul WOW! din aceasta alaturare.

Am semnalat deja ca am o slabiciune pentru biblioteci si carti si incaperi de studiu. Dincolo de functia "academica", astfel de spatii, mi se par sanctuare de liniste, de introspectie, de studiu de sine si de altii. Daca nu e posibil mereu sa dispunem de incaperi separate, izolate pentru asa ceva, cred ca astfel de "colturi de lectura" sunt un substitut mai mult decat onorabil si satisfacator. In principiu le prefer pe cele care au si carti in apropiere, dar chiar si in lipsa lor, toate decorurile surprinse in fotografiile de mai sus mi-au parut speciale si inspirationale.

Casa lui Iris

Nu pot sa spun ca sunt un fan al filmelor lui Nancy Meyers. Dar mai nou nu ratez nici unul, pentru decorurile superbe pe care le pune la cale in folosul potentarii povestii. Casa din Anglia rurala a personajului interpretat de Kate Winslet, Iris, este - asa cum probabil era previzibil - preferata mea, chiar daca am revazut de doua ori "It's Complicated" si m-am indragostit iremediabil de decorurile mai burgheze din film. Dar revenind, inclusiv cladirea izolata pe dealul inzapezit este atat de adorabila, incat pana si Karim Rashid s-ar induiosa.

Laura Pregger este un artist elvetian. Creaza corpuri de iluminat si vase din portelan dar si bijuterii. Toate sunt frumoase, dar bineinteles am pastrat pentru aici corpurile de iluminat. Frumusetea portelanului si luminii alaturate depaseste cu mult suma frumusetii celor doua luate separat.

Din multimea de scaune cult care devenite niste clasice contemporane (daca exista ueberhaupt asa ceva) sunt nelipsite din interioarele cu pretentii, scaunul balansoar Eames este de departe preferatul meu absolut. Asta daca se intreaba cineva ce-mi doresc de ziua mea, sau de Mos Craciun sau doar asa. :)

Nu-mi dau seama cum coliviile nu au capatat o conotatie negativa avand in vedere ca sunt asociate cu privare de libertate. Sau poate au capatat. De fapt nici mie nu-mi plac cand contin o cantatoare. Folosite insa strict cu rol decorativ, cu aplicatii practice sau nu, au un farmec aparte, melancolic si misterios.

Inevitabil, m-am "impiedicat" din nou de o locuinta ingusta si nespatioasa, dar adorabila, careia nu-i pot rezista. Interioarele reusite pentru care pare ca nu s-a depus efort de nici un fel, sunt cele cu care rezonez cel mai puternic.

In cazul de fata, e drept ca probabil e necesara o disciplina de fier, pentru a nu se transforma intr-o clipa intr-o locuinta de burlac neprimitoare si insalubra. Si asta ma face sa ma intreb daca nu cumva ordinea este punctul forte al acestui studio? Totusi faptul ca spatiul disponibil a fost exploatat la maximum, si nu doar in beneficiul functiei, ci si al confortului si al efectului vizual, e demn de dat la gazeta. Proprietarul este Zach Motl, care si-a castigat jobul de Junior Designer la firma de arhitectura la care lucreaza, nedetinand niciunul din atributele solicitate, dar trimitand fotografii ale micului sau apartament. Foarte cool. :)

Navigand in deriva pe net in cautare de solutii ingenioase de depozitare a revistelor, am constatat ca tema asta a arhivarii revistelor chiar e de actualitate si de mare interes, asa ca subiectul nu o sa revolutioneze blogosfera, dar cum ma numar printre cei pe care-i preocupa subiectul si cum dispun si de un blog, ma pronunt si eu. Trebuie sa spun ca in periplul meu n-am gasit vreo propunere care sa raspunda la toate intrebarile: arhivare atractiva, functionala si de mare capacitate. :) Cand vorbim de reviste si de oameni care nu se pot opri sa adune fiecare numar al titlurilor favorite, oricat as regreta, dar ...instalatii ca cele de mai jos - care, e drept, indeplinesc criteriul de ingeniozitate - chiar nu sunt de nici un ajutor.

Asadar ma declar aproape satisfacuta de propunerile din primele fotografii, iar carcasele atasate de peretele despartitor, ce permit identificarea publicatiei e chiar foarte clever.

Doamna de fier

Pe autoarea couture-ului din sarma, Leigh Pennebaker, o urmaresc de vreun an, dar in calitatea ei de mama. Ardeleanca cum sunt, ma orientez mai greu, si abia azi m-am lovit de un link mic-mic de pe blogul de mama, spre lucrarile ei artistice "My Sculpture Protofolio". Desi sunt din sarma, rigide, sunt atat de expresive si de delicate. Desi neinsufletite, au spirit. Si uite asa am mai adaugat ceva pe wish-list-ul meu nesfarsit. :)

Pentru cei care mai au cuburi de LEGO in cantitati industriale, ramase din copilarie sau de pe urma vreunui copil care a descoperit Wii intre timp, cred ca am gasit o posibilitate foarte ingenioasa de reciclare. E nevoie de doar de curaj si de meticulozitate. :)

N-am stiut pana ieri, ca Margiela are si o linie de home design, de fapt pana azi... Am desoperit sticlo/lampa de mai sus in vitrina unui magazin multi brand de haine unde se gasesc si creatiile vestimentare Maison Martin Margiela. Nu mi-a trecut prin cap ca ar putea sa-i apartina, desi are un design atat de curat, simplu si...alb, dar m-am lamurit azi cautand dupa "bottle lamp" pe internet.

E foarta cool(a), dar si o inspiratie grozava pentru un proiect DIY.

Ei bine, nu e tocmai alternativa cea mai practica de a utiliza un perete, dar cu siguranta e foarte inedita, desi e o solutie minunata pentru pereti pe care nu vrem sa-i aglomeram dar vrem sa le dam un sens.

Si trebuie sa va mai arat si lavoarul/chiuveta fara scurgere de mai jos. Desi a fost gandita ca un manifest eco, in sprijinul constientizarii consumului excesiv de apa - motiv pentru care oricum mi-e simpatica - imi place si pentru ca ma duce cu gandul la lavoarele de pe vremuri. N-as refuza sub nici un pretext genul asta de minimalism.
